Three rules that actually move the needle
1. The more specific the constraints, the more controllable the output. "Write good code" means nothing. "No external dependencies, handle malformed rows, run under 30 seconds" is a spec the model can follow.
2. Define the output format, always. Most disappointing answers are a format problem, not an intelligence problem. Say whether you want bullets, a table, code, or a word limit.
3. One example beats three paragraphs of description. If the task has a tricky input/output shape, paste one concrete example. Models are excellent at pattern-matching it.
FAQ
Why structure a prompt instead of just asking?
Separating role, task, context and constraints removes ambiguity — the model stops guessing what you want and spends its effort on the work. Structured prompts are also reusable: swap the task, keep the scaffolding.
Which part matters most?
Constraints and output format. Most vague answers come from underspecified constraints or no format at all. Say what to avoid and what shape the answer should take.
Does this work for Claude, GPT and Grok alike?
Yes — this structure is model-agnostic. Paste the generated prompt into any chat interface or API call.
Does my text leave my browser?
No. Everything is assembled in JavaScript on your device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
